Flanked on both shores by limestone mountains, Li River embodies the quintessential Chinese paintings landscapes. Most cruises last a day with lunch included. Ferries usually end point at the small town of Yangshuo, a perfect extension of a vacation in Guilin. At Yangshuo, you can rent bicycles to ride through the countryside. Besides the beautiful limestone crags in Guilin itself, visit the Seven Star Park which features caves and a zoo with the famous pandas.
Guilin is said to be founded in 214 BC. The best season to visit is in autumn. The town itself is not as developed as other major China cities, making it ideal for appreciating the ancient Chinese history. It is clean and organized, and a good place to spend a day exploring several smaller hills within its boundaries.
Guilin food is something not to be missed. You can also take some spicy Guilinjiang, a type of pepper sauce back home.
Guilin is almost 400 km northwest of Guangzhou.
