Once the centre of a glorious kingdom, ancient temples dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. Today, apart from spectacular sunset views and serene river cruises, Bagan is also the centre of the expanding Myanmar lacquerware industry.
Bagan was founded in 849 AD and it blossomd in the reign of King Anawrahta (1044-1077), the 42nd ruler of the Bagan Dynasty. Bagan's glory days ended abruptly with the invasion of the Mongul emperor Kublai Khan in 1287, after which the city was abandoned.
